As a transfer student from Florida State University, I have
already acclimated to the idea of college food. That being said, I found I had
more choices at FSU than on the UNC Asheville campus. By more choices, I mean if I felt like sushi on a Wednesday afternoon, I could find sushi.
Here, it seems the food options are more limited. On the other hand, FSU
didn’t have was as many vegetarian options. When it comes down to it, college
food is college food. It’s not the best food I’ve ever had in my life, but it
is what is offered. Because I live on campus, I have to pay for a meal plan. It
is outrageously priced for what is offered, in my opinion. What I loved about
FSU was they had two cafeterias (one on either end of campus for convenience),
a diner that stayed open late, and a Starbucks on one of the main paths to
classes and one in the library; but most of all the food court that housed
Pollo Tropical, a sushi restaurant, an Italian restaurant, and a burger place. FSU’s
dining was very good, but being in Asheville, I am eating much better. No
Freshman 15 here.

Focus Reflection: Show and Tell
Steve drove home early that day to surprise her.
Today was the 15th and according to her, they had been dating a full
year. He met her at the front door and sneakily slipped a blindfold over her
eyes. She felt his hand clasp hers and lead her down the driveway to his car.
She sat down in the passenger seat of her hot and humid boyfriend’s car that
had been cooking in the Florida heat all day. She heard the door shut next to
her, as few seconds go by, she hears Steve sit and close his
door. A blast of cool air streams by her face.
It seemed like forever to get wherever he had in mind. Her
door creaked open and he took her hand to lead her indoors. It was cool and
refreshing…and quiet. She heard footsteps behind her and now she could see. Her
cousins, mom, dad, sisters, friends, everyone was there in front of her but
most importantly, Steve, on his knee. Out of the silence broke the few most
precious words “Will You Marry Me?”. He had taken her to the restaurant where
they had their first date. Just as she had dreamed.

Focus Activity #1
Obviously, food matters. Food gives the body energy and without it, our bodies would shut down.
Personally, I have a love/hate relationship with food. I love to eat and getting together with my family to eat (like on holidays or Sunday dinners at my grandmother's house), but since I love to eat so much, I tend to overeat and concentrate on my sweet tooth. As a result of my love of food, I have body issues and a low self-esteem. As I learn more about food, I will, in turn, learn more about nutrition and restraint.
